Sesheke Town Council, BRE Sign MoU for Truck Park and Border Commercial Area Development.
Sesheke Town Council has on 11th May 2026 signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Barotse Royal Establishment Mwandi Kuta concerning a parcel of land for the construction of a truck park in Simawewe Village of Nakatindi Ward and the development of the Katima Mulilo commercial area situated at the border with the Republic of Namibia.
The signing ceremony was graced by Sesheke District Commissioner Alex Namenda, who was the guest of honor. He described the agreement as a major collective effort aimed at promoting development, strengthening institutional collaboration, enhancing land governance, and fostering sustainable socio-economic growth within Sesheke District.
Mr. Namenda noted that the border area has over the years experienced rapid and largely unplanned growth. This brought challenges such as poor sanitation, traffic congestion, and unregulated trading activities.
“This partnership acknowledges the separate but complementary mandates of the two institutions. Sesheke Town Council, as the statutory planning authority shall provide technical guidance and oversight in land use planning and development control. Equally, the Barotse Royal Establishment Mwandi Kuta, as the custodian of customary land and traditional shall continue to safeguard community interests and facilitate local participation in the development process,” he said.
During the same event, Acting Council Chairperson Mr. Lumingu Kamocha explained that Council will mobilize the necessary resources and expertise for infrastructure development and service provision, including waste management within the planned areas.
He further noted that the Council will ensure the issuance of development permits and trading licenses in compliance with approved planning standards, while upholding transparency and accountability in revenue collection and management.
